LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- Utah State University wants to know if wind from Logan Canyon can keep campus lights on.
The school is collecting wind data near the school's power station. The study could last a year.
"It's fairly commonly known that there is a strong wind every night out of Logan Canyon," said Ben Berrett, facility operations director. "We felt like it was worth looking at to pursue another resource to lower our energy costs."
For three years, the school has exceeded its budget for natural gas and electricity. In the fiscal year that ended June 30, Utah State's energy bills were $1.8 million higher than the $7 million set aside by lawmakers, budget director Whitney Pugh said.
A wind turbine would produce clean energy in the Cache Valley, which has pollution problems each winter.
"A wind turbine would not produce any emissions," Berrett said.
