Canadian Hydro, a Calgary-based company started operating the province's first major wind farm, a 45-turbine project near Shelburne in Melancthon township last year and had plans to complete construction of the second and even larger phase of the project on nearby land next year.
But members of the Six Nations confederacy, the same group involved in the Caledonia standoff over native land claims there, are laying claim to the land where Canadian Hydro has erected the huge wind turbines to help meet the province's growing need for electricity.
Kahentinetha Horn, one of two Women Title Holders with the Six Nations said the company was warned about their land claims in the area before it went ahead and built last year.
"We've been robbed of our land and now we want it back," Horn said in an interview from her home at the Kahnawake reserve near Montreal.
