Zoning board denies wind farm exemption
After about three hours of deliberations, the county Zoning Hearing Board Wednesday denied a special exception that would allow Vermont-based Laurel Hill Wind Energy to build a electricity-producing windmills on a mountain ridge in Jackson and McIntyre townships.

Board members Guy Shinn, Peter Miller and Robert Rabuttinio voted against the exception, while Lloyd Forcey and William Klein voted to approve it.
The vote was made after attorney Tom Marshall presented closing arguments on behalf of the wind energy company.
Marshall said the project fit three criteria the board needed to consider to grant the exception: its consistency with the comprehensive plan; its impact on the health and well-being of the neighborhood; and its effect on the area’s utilities, services and infrastructure.
Marshall said there has been much testimony presented over the last year and a half.
