The request by a group of residents upset over a wind turbine they say impacts the quality of their lives was granted at the Libertyville Village Board's last meeting when a moratorium relating to the construction, installation and operation of wind turbines was approved.
The 180-day moratorium was approved in conjunction with a referral from the board to the Plan Commission to review possible amendments to the zoning code pertaining to wind turbines.
Dave Gates, a member of Citizens for the Protection of Libertyville, thanked the board for listening to the group's concerns, approving the moratorium and recommending review of the zoning code, something he said will keep Aldridge Electric, and anyone else, from installing additional wind turbines.
Village Attorney David Pardys said it was important to note that under the moratorium, it is possible that applications for wind turbines will be received and processed, but no permits will be issued.
Laurie Renz, another member of Citizens for the Protection of Libertyville, said the village should be cautious of what the zoning code allows because when she questioned representatives from Aldridge Electric about concerns related to the wind turbine, the response she got was that they followed the village's codes.
"Keep in mind that what the village says is what people can do and sometimes that doesn't work out very well," Renz said.
Mayor Terry Weppler said the purpose of their request is to review the ordinances and consider the best locations for turbines that don't disrupt residents.
Any changes recommended by the Plan Commission must be approved by the Village Board.
The moratorium does not restrict the use of wind turbines that were lawfully installed prior to the effective date of the ordinance.
