Citizens for the Protection of Libertyville addressed the Village Board at its last meeting over their concerns about a wind turbine operating near their residences.
Dave Gates, a member of Citizens for the Protection of Libertyville, said the group is upset over a 120-foot wind turbine located at Aldridge Electric, 844 E. Rockland Road, within 250-feet of their homes. He said the turbine has impacted the quality of their lives, with loud noise and shadow flickers on his and his neighbor's properties.
Libertyville is named in a lawsuit the residents have filed to stop the running of the wind turbine. The turbine began running in April.
Since filing the lawsuit, residents have won two temporary restraining orders to stop the turbine. A preliminary injunction has been granted which currently allows Aldridge Electric to run the turbine from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
"That's in place until we can come up with the money to go to jury trial," Gates said.
Libertyville officials have been limited in what they are allowed to discuss since being named in the lawsuit, but Village Administrator Kevin Bowens said the village has agreed to issue a moratorium on wind turbines at its next board meeting.
Gates said Citizens for the Protection of Libertyville want the village to amend their codes and put ordinances in place to prevent people from building wind turbines in residential areas. The goal of the lawsuit is to get the wind turbine turned off for good and moved somewhere else, somewhere that does not affect residents.
"Our message is, we're not going away," Gates said. The group has hired attorney Rick Porter, from Rockford, to represent them.
