NAPLES, Fla. - A proposal to put up wind turbines along one of Southwest Florida's most prestigious beaches is getting mixed reaction.
A Naples city councilman wants them on the city's beach front mansions. Others say no way!
"We need to be looking at every alternative. Wind is one of them," Naples City Councilman Gary Price says.
That's why he wants the city to allow small wind turbines to be placed on the rooftops of beachfront homes in the city.
"We do allow solar on top of homes. We've already covered that in our code, but wind is not allowed, and I thought maybe we should at least give somebody the opportunity, if they wanted to use wind power, that they could," Price explains.
Naples residents we talked to say its great to look at alternative energy sources.
"Sailors used it hundreds of years ago to cross the oceans, so I think we can figure out something to do with it," Thomas Riches says.
But some don't feel beachfront property is the place to generate wind energy.
"If it was no the beach, I would say no," Fritzie Schrade says.
"Probably not on the roof," Riches adds.
Price says the turbines would have to fit within the city's code that allows nothing more than five feet above the roof and likely wouldn't even be visible from the street.
"We don't want it to take away from the character of the community," he says.
His plan would cut down on power usage, and in just a couple years, he says the savings in homes like these could pay for the $15,000 to $30,000 he says it would cost for the equipment.
"I think whenever we can present an opportunity and look at ways to save energy and capture what we have as a resource, we should do that," Price says.
City Council has given the go-ahead for city staff to look into the costs, payback period, effectiveness, and parameters for wind energy to fit in city code. Price says they'll bring their recommendations to City Council in the next month or so.
