The city of Summerside is one step closer to setting up a wind energy generation project in North St. Eleanors.
Terry Murphy, the city's chief administration officer, said Thursday, the city's Environmental Impact Assessment for the four-turbine wind farm, has been approved and funding has been secured through the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF) and the gas tax rebate for the first phase of the program.
Funding for the second phase is being sought through the Building Canada Fund.
The project, located in the area of the former landfill site, has met with some opposition from neighbouring residents over the proximity the four wind turbines will be to homes.
Murphy said one of the major concerns of residents was noise. He said the city has now modified its plans to bring the noise level below 45 decibels - a standard that will address the noise issue.
