Public Service Commissioner Kevin Cramer says a 1,000 megawatt wind energy project will show how much North Dakotans support wind development.
FPL Energy wants to invest $2 billion in a wind farm in Oliver and Morton counties. It will build 667 wind towers over 250 square miles.
Cramer says the wind farm will mean a lot of disruption when it's being built, and he says it will have a permanent impact on the landscape.
"It is our job to insure these investments are done in a way that will have minimal adverse impact on our cultural resources, our environment and certainly on the people," said Cramer. "There is no way that 667 turbines won't have some impact. Certainly there is some favorable impact -- but this will be an intrusion on the landscape. And I believe it will be a test of just how much of this type of investment North Dakotans are willing to tolerate. I don't know what the answer to that is right now."
FPL Energy hopes to finish the wind farm by the end of 2012.
