Farm blows ill wind, but developer stands firm
A PUBLIC meeting about the proposed Evandale wind farm drew an emotional response from a large crowd that spilled out of the Parkesbourne church hall.

The proposed windfarm will feature 16 125m high turbines and is one of three new wind farms planned for the Southern Tablelands by developers Taurus Energy.
Parkesbourne Mummel landscape Guardians treasurer Evette Economos said about 100 people turned up last Tuesday evening, which was planned as a community information meeting.
"It was to make up for the lack of information that the community had received from developers on the project," Mrs Economos said.
"The community was angry at not being properly consulted about the development."
She said most of the residents did not know where Evandale was when the development was advertised and it didn't register that it was in their backyards.
Mrs Economos said there was a great deal of anger in the room and people's concerns focused on the proposals' visual and noise impacts.
"A lot of people will be living in close proximity to this wind farm and the developers seem oblivious to this when choosing a site," she said.
"We are not against renewable energy but the obvious point is that we're not in an industrial area here but rural-residential area."
When asked if she could be accused of NIMBYism (Not In My Back Yard) Mrs Economos said: "I have done research myself - the whole concept is inefficient, it is not an appropriate site and it does not make sense to me to put it out here."
Speakers on the evening included Malcom Barlow, Paul Miskelly, and Mike Halleen. Mr Barlow spoke about the effects of the Crookwell II windfarm on neighbours. Mr Halleen spoke about noise issues while Mr Miskelly focused on the inefficiency of wind-generated electricity.
In a brave move, the developers turned up to answer the community's questions.
After the meeting Taurus Energy executive director Martin Poole said he was politely received.
"People listened to what we had to say and we totally supported the objective of the evening - to share some information," Mr Poole said.
"We think we addressed a number of points and we now have a deeper understanding of the concerns people have.
"I don't argue with visual impacts but we have said to people if we can make them happy with screening we are happy to do it."
In response to concerns about noise impacts, Mr Poole said his company was following the Australian standards and that the proposed turbines were "not going anywhere near adjacent housing."
Mr Poole was asked on the night whether Taurus would pull out of the development if the community was unanimously opposed.
"I can guarantee that the whole community does not totally oppose it, and it is not just the landowners who benefit," he said.
"These are the people who don't have the confidence to shout at me, they will be down the back and at the end they will quietly say I think you're doing the right thing."
Mr Poole said Taurus did not have a buyer for the electricity the wind farm would produce.
"The market for renewable energy is all but dead at the moment," he said.
"Prices are hopeless. This government will not raise the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target (MRET).
"The focus is going into clean coal, even the money that used to go to solar at the CSIRO has been diverted to geosequestration (the burying of carbon dioxide). We are throwing away a world advantage in solar to become a world-follower in burying CO2."
Mr Poole said he expected the development application for the windfarm to be completed in the next two months. When it was finished the company would hold another public meeting in the area that would be widely advertised.
"At this meeting we will display the final turbine layouts, noise impact studies, biodiversity, transport studies, visual impact studies, and aviation studies," he said.
"Will have copies of the EIS for people to take away before it goes to the Department of Planning."
