Grand Rapids Township Road Commissioner Steve Lehr talked about wind towers and trucks at the township's meeting Tuesday.
He told board members Invenergy, the company building a wind farm in La Salle County, has changed its plans.
"I'm told that there will be 34 wind towers in their second phase and that they will all be in Grand Rapids Township," Lehr reported.
He said the plan calls for building two towers west of East 21st Road -- the township's east-west dividing line -- while the remaining 32 would be constructed east of East 21st Road. Township Supervisor George Hess had one question: "Did they give you a date that they will be asking the county for permits?"
While Lehr was not given any specific date of when Invenergy would be applying for the county permits needed for the wind tower project's second phase, Lehr said it was the second time this month the company has changed its plans.
"So I'm not real certain this will be their final decision right now."
At last month's meeting, Invenergy reported nine turbines were completely constructed in the township and 31 partial turbines were in progress. The company reported all towers should be built by Thursday, May 15, and phase one could be finished in mid-July.
In other business, Lehr asked the board's opinion about the possibility of purchasing a 1998 International truck for use as a snow plow.
"I found out about this truck in Agri-News. A private party just north of Madison, Wis., is selling it and I'd like to drive up there to take a look at it. The truck's got 67,000 miles on it and the price is around $39,000. The only thing is that it's never pushed snow so we would have to add hydraulics."
Lehr told the board that state bids for a new truck ranged anywhere from $83,335 to $94,577 for a new single-axle truck.
"I'd like to know the board's opinion on whether or not I should pursue this."
After a short discussion, the trustees told Lehr to move forward.
"I see no problem with this, so go ahead," said member Robert Hagie.
