Health concerns and the need for careful siting of wind turbines
March 4, 2009
by Medical Staff, Northern Maine Medical Center
At its monthly meeting held Tuesday, March 3, 2009, the Medical Staff of Northern Maine Medical Center unanimously approved the release of the following statement:
Birds are a priceless part of America's heritage. They are beautiful, they are economically important-and they reflect the health of our environment. This State of the Birds report reveals troubling declines of bird populations during the past 40 years-a warning signal of the failing health of our ecosystems. At the same time, we see heartening evidence that strategic land management and conservation action can reverse declines of birds. This report calls attention to the collective efforts needed to protect nature's resources for the benefit of people and wildlife.

Objection to Deepwater Wind meteorological tower proposal - Block Island
February 27, 2009
by Attorney Mark J. Hagopian
This letter was submitted to the Town of New Shoreham on Block Island prior to the Town granting permission for Deepwater Wind to erect a met tower on town land under the Special Temporary Provisions (Section 112) of the Town's zoning. Under Section 112, permits may be granted only for a use or purpose that cannot be accomplished by compliance with provisions of the ordinance. Attorney Hagopian argues that Deepwater's proposal does not meet the "exigent circumstance requirements" including risks to public health and safety or any other emergency or urgent necessity that warrants invoking this provision.

by Bruce Taylor, Senior Project Manager
DZ 6808 is a revision of NZS 6808:1998 Acoustics - The assessment and measurement of sound from wind turbine generators. The 1998 version was written prior to significant wind farm development in New Zealand. The basic methodology proved robust, but experience and research over the following decade brought to light numerous refinements and enhancements, which are now addressed in the revised draft.
The 'Citizens for Open Government' through its Attorney Richard Porter filed this motion to dismiss the special use permit application and the public hearing in the matter of FPL Energy Illinois Wind LLC. FPL Energy is seeikng a permit to erect up to 151 industrial scale wind turbines in an area currently zoned A-1, agricultural District. Attorney Richard Porter argues that the application is incomplete and the use not permitted according to current laws in the County. Attorney Porter's detailed arguments can accessed by clicking on the link below. The County took no action on this motion.
