Transmission line loss

The transmission and distribution grid system within the United States loses approximately 7.2% of the energy to resistance. Given 500,000 MW of energy available on the U.S. grid system, up to 36,000 MW may be lost, representing nearly 3x the installed capacity of wind in the country. If wind facilities are built far from load centers and the energy delivered via an extensive transmission network, it's reasonable to ask how much of this energy actually reaches its destination.

Work on wind utility site starting this week

Posted by: Lisa on August 12, 2009 11:26:13 PM
Big machines have been rolling up to Allegheny Mountain for days. Site development work on Virginia's first industrial wind energy plant is expected to start this week. Passersby report heavy equipment has been parked near the entrance to Red Oak Knob, and blasting heard over the last couple of days. A skidder moved in after dark a few days ago, and trees are being cut near one of the turbine sites; one truck full of logs has already headed out with its load.
