Now, to top it off, a Chicago (the windy city) corporation would like to put up over 100 giant wind turbines (as tall as 40-story buildings) blinking and twirling for all to see, across the highest, grandest mountain ridges of our state.

.....the PSC decision sends a clear message: Builders of controversial projects should be reasonable toward all concerned parties, instead of turning hostile to those who question. West Virginia’s majestic crests may belong to the landowners, but they’re also the spiritual property of all residents. Polite cooperation is needed in deciding the fate of those beloved summits.

Stop and think what made this state so unique and beautiful. Why can't we see that our treasured mountains are too precious to sell to the next big land speculator or energy giant?

Gov. Joe Manchin's enlightened proposal to place a moratorium on wind turbine development in the county makes both economic and political sense. I thank him for his courageous stand and encourage him to unilaterally place a moratorium on the construction of wind turbines.

If there ever was a time to proceed cautiously, it is now with respect to “wind farms” in West Virginia. The potential benefits to the State are so insignificant, while the potential environmental and economic consequences so enormous, that a moratorium on all wind power facilities (not just those near airports) is in order.

Gov. Manchin is only being prudent by suggesting that West Virginia turbine projects also wait until the national studies are completed. Isn’t it better to be safe than sorry? I honestly believe the governor should pass an executive order halting the building of more giant wind turbines in West Virginia until we can all get our bearings.

...nuclear power emits no carbon dioxide and causes no air pollution. It can be argued that because of the large amount of base-load electricity it produces from a small amount of fuel, nuclear power is the only energy source that can make a real difference in the battle against global warming.

It’s just not necessary for Greenbrier County to surrender to a highly questionable technology that cannot deliver what it promises.

As the state’s newspaper, the Gazette owes to its readers the effort to become informed as to the facts of the impending environmental disaster that is about to destroy our greatest natural resource, rather than simply parroting the wind industry’s false claims, as so many woefully uninformed newspapers and commentators have done.

I walked on my normal walk in the woods one day and looked up to the top of the mountain. Just several months before it had been a picturesque view of wilderness beauty ... the kind that attracts tourists and creates much of the state's income. Now, it was lined with these tall mechanical monsters, towering over the trees of an old forest. I am not talking about the quaint and charming windmills of Holland here, we are talking about metal and flashing lights and a size that miniaturizes the grand forest beneath it.

This is a letter written by Paula Stahl of St. George, West Virginia, about her experiences living in the neighborhood of the 66 MW Mountaineer Wind Energy Center. Formerly known as the Backbone Mountain Wind Farm, the 4,400-acre site has 44 turbines, 1.5 MW each, stretched along miles of ridgeline in Tucker and Preston counties.
