It's coming.

Wind energy is making it's way across the country and throughout Nebraska. Now, there's a good chance it will be coming to Hamilton County.

While there aren't any large wind farms in the area to date, there are some individuals in the area looking to make use of the renewable energy resource.

The Hamilton County Joint Planning Commission met last Tuesday night to discuss incorporating possible regulations into their comprehensive planning and zoning regulations with regard to wind energy.

Jim and Liz Senn of Marquette are in the process of purchasing a wind turbine and wanted to obtain a permit for the turbine but land use hasn't been addressed in the county's regulations.

Board members were presented a guide for state and local governments from the American Wind Energy Association, detailing regulations they could incorporate into their planning regulations.

Knox and Hall counties are two counties that have recently adopted regulations in regards to wind turbines.

The board suggested looking at other's regulations to assist them with developing their own.

Zoning administrator Darla Svoboda said the purpose of the meeting was to begin the process of changing the plan and giving the board some of the information they need to look at, to come up with the regulations.

"We have to come up with rules and regulations that are unique and fit our county," she said. "There's a lot to look at."

"Our present land uses and how this would affect our present land uses," she added. "We would have to see where would be the perfect area for this type of land use. It may be usable in one part of the county and not necessarily in another."

No action was taken at the meeting.

The board will continue to address the issue at their next meeting, tentatively set for Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. inside the district courtroom.
