A possible wind farm in eastern South Dakota will primarily be in Day and Clark counties, a spokesman for NextEra Energy Resources said Tuesday.

NextEra officials were scheduled to meet with Brown County commissioners on Tuesday, but had to cancel the appointment. They met with commissioners in Day and Clark counties, but didn't have enough time to make it to Brown County, said Steve Stengel, NextEra spokesman. He said the Brown County meeting will be rescheduled soon.

Day County Commissioner Mark Wattier said the wind farm likely will be built mostly in southwestern Day County and northwestern Clark County.

Wattier said part of the project would be built on land he owns. He said that more than a year ago, NextEra contacted landowners it wants to work with. NextEra would like to start construction yet this year so work can be done during winter if the weather allows, Wattier said.

Stengel said the potential 100-megawatt wind farm is still in the early stages. He said a small portion of the project would likely be in Brown County.

A 100-megawatt wind farm could provide power for roughly 25,000 homes, Stengel said.

Steve Wegman of the South Dakota Wind Energy Association said the state has known about the possibility of the wind farm for a few years. He said it's not surprising that it hasn't garnered more discussion because NextEra often keeps a low profile.

Tests show the region east of the James River valley - from about 15 miles north of U.S. Highway 12 in the Andover area to near Clark - has a high wind energy potential, Wegman said.

NextEra, formerly known as Florida Power and Light, is involved in other wind power projects in South Dakota, including those in the Highmore area and Deuel County, Wegman said.

South Dakota's current wind energy production is roughly 250 megawatts, according to the state.
