BETHANY BEACH - A project that could involve the town in the Bluewater Wind offshore wind farm project has been proposed, and officials and residents are looking at possible plans with careful eyes.

Bluewater is planning to construct a wind farm several miles off the coast of Rehoboth Beach in the coming years. The wind power produced would create green energy for the area, as well as additional jobs and revenue, officials said.

Bethany Beach has long been slated to be one of the local recipients of green energy from the planned wind farm, but the town now finds it could be in the middle of the facility's operations.

Bluewater officials have presented the town with a plan that would bring cables from the wind farm out of the water at the beach near Garfield Parkway, under the boardwalk and down Garfield Parkway to Kent Avenue, where they would be routed south to a Delmarva Power substation.

A presentation by Bluewater representative Rob Propes outlined work to be completed in the beach and boardwalk area, which he said would take place in the off-season.

"In order to minimize disturbance within the intertidal zone, horizontal directional drilling will be used to install a 20-inch diameter, high-density polyethylene conduit for each of the submarine cables," he said. "Work will be conducted over a period of approximately eight weeks during nonsummer season months."

Councilwoman Margaret Young said she has already received feedback from residents.

"There's a very wide variation of comments that are coming in," she said. "There are people who think this is the most wonderful thing in the world because it's going to use wind and there won't be any contamination. Then there are those people who say ‘they're not digging up my street.' "

Resident John Brennan said he supports the project and the move toward green energy.

"We need to have an alternative energy source, and we've dug up the ground all around for high-speed cable and everything else," he said. "I have no problem with the project, as long as there's oversight to make sure it's done properly."
